Wetsuit Temperature Guide

See the recommended wetsuit temperature chart below to find the best one to suit your seasonal surfing habits

cold water surf

Having the proper wetsuit is crucial to keep the body temperature to moderation. Too thick wetsuit on hot summer days will not let the body to breathe, which will result in overheating and dizziness. On the other hand, surfing in cold water in a thinner wetsuit than recommended, will end up in losing a lot of body heat, which will drain energy resources real quick.

Wetsuit Thickness Terminology:

  • Rashguard – A top that prevents the chest against the rash from rubbing against the waxed surfboard when paddling. Rashguards are generally 0.5mm to 1mm thick and used on warm weather surfing
  • 2/1 – A wetsuit that’s 2mm thick around the body, crotch, and 1mm thick around arms and legs
  • 5/4/3 – A wetsuit that’s 5mm thick around the core, 4mm thick around the groin and upper arms and legs, and 3mm thick on lower arms and legs. Those thick wetsuits are generally used on cold-water surf and equipped with warm and soft lining around the core
  • 5/4 hooded – A wetsuit that’s 5mm thick around the core, 4mm on legs, arms and is equipped with a pull-on hood. Used on cold-water surfing conditions
  • Shorty – A wetsuit with short arms and legs
  • Long sleeve shorty – A wetsuit with long sleeves and short legs
  • Long Jane – A wetsuit with long legs and no-, or short arms
  • Steamer – A full wetsuit for colder weather
  • Springsuit – Wetsuit for moderate temperatures

Back-zip or chest zip?

  • Back-Zip wetsuits are widely used in summer wetsuits. Back in the day, all the wetsuits had zippers on the back. The downside used to be the neck-rach from the collar and the “flush” as it tended to let water in when duck-diving. On the bright side: they are easy to put on and to get out! Today’s back-zip wetsuits have been designed to minimize the flush and come with more comfortable and adjustable collar design.
  • Chest-Zip wetsuits, on the other hand, have a small entrance on the chest area. Those wetsuits are widely used today. Some people find it hard to enter and get out of the suit due to the squeezy entrance while preferring it over the back-zip wetsuits over the minimized flush. Note, that a chest-zip wetsuit zipper can damage your board if the zipper has not tucked inside the zipper-line.

The bottom line is – choosing a chest-zip- or a back-zip wetsuit is a personal preference that forms with experience over time.
