Depending on person’s blood type, blood flow, percentage of fat in the body and other factors – it is a personal preference to use a shorty, a 2/2 or something lighter, but using a 4/3 in 65-75’C might be a slight overkill and limit your performance – unless your wetsuit is already worn out and might slip some water in to cool you down.

Women’s Surf Wetsuit Size Guide – 7 Main Brands

Back-zip or Chest-zip?

back zip and chest zip wetsuits

Diagonal or horizontal zipper?

The debate that’s been going on ever since the alternatives to back-zip wetsuits were first made. The conclusion I’ve found, after going through a ton of feedback, is quite simple; It’s all about personal preferences!

On a 3/2 wetsuit or a springsuit, both of the varieties are being widely used. There also zipless wetsuits available, that are only made up to 3mm thickness.

  • Back-zip wetsuits are generally cheaper
  • Chest-zip wetsuits are widely used among experienced surfers

Although, don’t get me wrong – I’ve been using a back-zip on my 3/2 springsuit.

What’s more important?

Whether it’s the speed of getting in and out of the wetsuit that matters the minimal flush during surfing? It’s been said that pro surfers mostly use the chest-zip wetsuits for surfing, which is a fracture more expensive to build, while the technology and features today’s back-zip wetsuits have are quite advanced to prevent the flushing as well.

Although, the bottom line is – the larger the zipper area, the higher chance of flushing there is.

But, when choosing a springer wetsuit, there’s no wrong choice to go with as the slight flush is not that severe compared to steamer wetsuits that are used in cold-water surfing.

Chest-zip surf wetsuit

  • Less flush when duck diving means better insulation inside the suit
  • Drain holes that help to flow the water inside the chest-pocket
  • Larger back-panel = less stitching

  • Harder and more time consuming to put on and get out of
  • No-velcro strap around the neck

Back-zip surf wetsuit

  • Generally cheaper
  • Easier to put on if you are not that flexible
  • Adjustable velcro around the neck.

  • Due to the larger zipper area on the back panel – the water might sweep inside the suit when duck diving or getting rumbled by the waves
  • Some velcro straps might be too tight around the neck, creating a rash

3/2 or a 2/2 for warm-water surfing?

The answer comes down to the specific location where you live.

Whether you reside on the southern part of the world, where the winters are mild and summers hot, it’s ok to get a 4/3 for the winter and 2/2 for the late and early summer surf seasons, but living further up where the temperatures vary a lot – getting a 5/3 and 3/2 combo is probably the best for you. It’s always to get a bit warmer than a colder wetsuit for surfing.

Wetsuit care

A wetsuit is a piece of performance clothing that needs proper care to maximize natural product life. Body oils, saltwater, surfboard wax, and many more factors all soaked together in a waterproof material – does not sound very self-cleansing. Take a look at the recommendations below:

After the surf

  1. Be gentle when getting in and out of the wetsuit. It is reasonable to take extra time on the process if you don’t want to mess up your zippers or stretch out the seams.
  2. Once you are done surfing, come out of the wetsuit and leave it inside out.
  3. Always wash the wetsuit thoughtfully after each session. It is best to leave the wetsuit soaked inside a bucket full of freshwater.
  4. After the wetsuit has soaked in the water for 10-20mins, take it out of the bucket and rinse it with a hose.
  5. Try not to use hot water when rinsing, and by hot I mean the one that burns your skin.
  6. Leave the wetsuit hanging somewhere with enough air ventilation (Out of the sun).
  7. Also check how do you store your wetsuit, the best one I’ve found is made by thehangpro.
  8. Once the wetsuit has dried for a reasonable amount of time, turn the wetsuit the right way around so that the outer layers facing outwards. That way the wetsuit dries completely and is ready for the next session!

Shampooing the wetsuit

It’s not a bad idea to wash the wetsuit, boots, gloves, and hoods with the proper shampoo and conditioner. Add 2 cups of cleaning liquid and mix it with 1 gallon of water. Leave it there for half an hour, then rinse off the shampoo with clean water. That’s the best you could do to your wetsuit now and then. Probably after every 5-10 times is enough.

Neoprene, a synthetic rubber – that what wetsuits are made of – needs to be taken care of to maximize the lifespan of your wetsuit.
