Q: What is the difference between surfing, diving, and triathlon wetsuits?

A: Technology and design

Movement:

Triathlon wetsuits are generally thinner than surfing and diving wetsuits. Triathlon wetsuits are intended for maximum movement and are not as warm

Diving wetsuits: Diving wetsuits might limit the movement due to different stitching technology. As diving wetsuit is intended to be submerged, they also have better insulation and therefore poor breathing capabilities.

Surfing Wetsuits: Mixture in the middle between the diving and triathlon wetsuit. As the surfer is half-submerged and moving is not as intense as on triathlon, but still more than the diving wetsuit – a surfing wetsuit is a mixture, that has the perfect flexibility and warmth.

Thickness

Triathlon wetsuits are meant for constant movement and swimming, therefore they can’t be too thick to let the body overheat. Triathlon wetsuits technology consider the fact, that the body generates the main warmth. More important role on the triathlon wetsuit is the slick outer skin that helps to minimize the drag.

Diving wetsuits: Intended use submerged.

Recommended wetsuit thickness for the season:

  • Summer: 1mm, 2mm
  • Spring: 2mm, 3mm, 3/2
  • Autumn: 3/2, 4/3, 4mm
  • Winter: 4/3, 5/3, 5/4

Q: Does wetsuit keep you warm?

A: Properly chosen wetsuit, that has the right thickness and fit – will keep you warm.

Q: What is the difference between the surf wetsuit companies

A: There are minor differences between the surf brands. The surf wetsuit brands listed in this guide are all one of the most used mass-production.

Q: Basic or brand wetsuit?

A: Basic wetsuits lack the movement capabilities and linings that a good surf wetsuit has to have these days. Great surf brand wetsuits are packed with technology to maximize the outcome of your effort.

Q: What is the difference between men and women’s wetsuits?

A: Technologies on each brand seem to be the same, while the main difference is the body type design – so the sizing.

Q: What do the numbers in the wetsuit thickness mean in the thickness?

A2mm means, that the whole wetsuit is 2mm thick. 5/4 means that the wetsuit core is 5mm thick, while the arms and legs are 4mm. 5/4/3 means that the core is 5mm thick, shoulders and thighs around 4mm and arms and lower parts of legs 3mm.

Q: How to pick the right size wetsuit for you?

Q: What is the difference between the wetsuits listed down below?

A: Poor salesman advice right here: All the women’s wetsuits listed down below are designed for surfing, therefore pretty much the same with minor differences. All the wetsuits are good, and as always – the more expensive models have a bit more advanced technology in them.

Q: What are the alternatives for mass production wetsuits?

A: Custom made wetsuits. Seventh Wave, a wetsuit company based in New Zealand is the perfect example who produces wetsuits according to your body measures. They also use top of the line Yamamoto neoprene and are really into the industry!

Patagonia is known for their different approach towards the modern wetsuit. Probably the most advanced wetsuits in the market, There’s a lot every surfer should know about their mission, so definitely worth a check!

Q: Can a female surfer use the male wetsuit?

A: Sure can, as each person has a different body type. The main difference between the female and male wetsuits is the design. and color schemes. Obviously, the sizing around the waist and chest differ from the male’s wetsuits as well.
